Volunteers Needed for Committees

Parents the PTO is in need of volunteers to help us make some events happen.

Amazing Flagstaff Race - Saturday Sept 28th:  There are 10 stops planned and ready to set up.  This would be easy work.  This event starts before the Fall Festival which is also on the 28th.

Hospitality Committee (Formerly Teacher Appreciation):  This committee is really fun.  If you are a pinterestaholic, this could be for you.  Teacher/Staff Appreciation, Meals for Conferences, Volunteer Appreciation.  Gather your friends and have some fun!

Festival of Cultures - February: Celebration of cultures represented at Flagstaff or any culture, country.  You don't have to be from another country to host a country.  The country hosts come up with what they will display, this committee just organizes this event.

Yearbook - We have a photographer lined up for this year!  We need someone to put the book together.  This would be great for 4-5 people to work on.  If you like scrap-booking, digital layouts etc this is for you.  It can be done at home and online.

Year End Picnic - May: Final Celebration of the school year put on by the PTO.  Last year the Ethical Student Leadership group put this together with some guidance.  Great job students.  Food trucks were a hit.  This is an easy event to plan.

Thanks to several great gals - Edye Bury, Paula Greenspan, Ana McCracken, and Sam Myhre pictures were taken and placed into the pages of the 2012- 2013 Yearbook.  The yearbook looks "marvelous".  Excited to see the excellent layouts that were done. These gals ROCK!

March Can Drive

Bring your aluminum cans, aluminum pans, anything aluminum to the March Can Drive on Friday, March 8th.
Drop off starts at 3:00pm, North West Parking Lot of the Tasty Weasel corner of S. Sunset and Lefthand Circle.

Every can helps Flagstaff get closer to earning the Prize for the most amount collected.  This is a statewide competition.  Flagstaff is currently runner up behind a one room school from Pueblo!!!  We CAN do this Dragons!  If you have questions related to what can be recycled, please check out Wise Recycling's website: http://www.wiserecycling.com/locations/colorado/longmont/  
Please note that all monies earned by recycling will be matched by Mobile Canning, LLC of Longmont."

Eco Dragons CAN DRIVE 2/1/13

This Friday, February 1, 2013 is the next monthly CAN DRIVE!
Bring your empty cans-"Aluminum that is" to the Tasty Weasel WEST Parking lot at 3:00pm.  You can come before Driveline/Walker pickup. 
Items you can bring - aluminum cans, aluminum baking pans, cast aluminum (nonstick frying pans that the nonstick wore off) or click on this link
Wise Recycling to see other items that they accept.

With this Can Drive the PTO has collected over 260 cans and brought in close to $300, which will go towards funding for Teacher/Staff requests at Flagstaff Academy.

enVision Math Curriculum Questions

General PTO Meeting, Tuesday, January 8, 2013 - enVision Math Curriculum was presented to the general members.  Parents attending were taken through a 5th grade math lesson, taught by Mrs. Kelly Burnett.  The parents were asked to watch a video on the lesson, then participate in the worksheets for that lesson.  They were given the math tools needed.  Mrs. Burnett did an excellent job teaching to the roughly 40 parents attending.  The following are questions submitted that Ms. Long and Mrs. Burnett simply did not have the time to answer that evening.
How are the students given the information about the math changes?  (Flagstaff Teachers, Admin and Staff Rock!) Students were not told directly about the change in mathematics curriculum because their minds are very open at this age, and they easily adapt to new instructions, as long as it is taught consistently, which it has been.  In general students are not having issues in class with the math instruction.
I think teachers find this math helpful because it teaches to the high level learners as well as the low level learners.  (ex. those that get the topic quickly vs those that need more help)  I feel like the faster learners are being short changed even though they are able to do "projects", which seem like a way to fill the time.  Can't they just move to the next lesson?  We want our children to not move on quickly through the material, but to fully gain mastery.  It is one thing to quickly cover something, and have that child move on to the next thing, it is true learning to cover something, and have a child gain a deep understanding of it.  Students in the advanced classes go deeper into the conceptual portion of math, which sets them up for greater success in the advanced math classes in High School and college.
I would like to be sure there is enough information for the parents (to) learn this method of learning math, including Vocabulary etc...  
If I cannot get the question correct with the amount of high level math courses I have taken, then that is a problem.  Remember, we are teaching students a conceptual way of learning math., which is unlike anything we ever learned as students.  If you view the website and visual learning bridges on the website, you would quickly pick up the conceptual piece.  I also encourage you to attend one of your upcoming math sessions or contact your teacher directly to get a better idea of what conceptual piece is being taught in the classroom.
If they stay in enVision can they get into AP classes at Niwot?   Yes.

Can they get into college with this curriculum... a math or science engineer major?  Yes.

Will our kids have to take summer school in order to pass tests to get into algebra and beyond?  Definitely not.

How often do they check if enVision is working?  I'm concerned that my kid will get into 8th grade and (it) wont work, then can't excel in High School and beyond.  Remember, this is a change we are making because standards for all of Colorado and many other states now require a conceptual understanding as well as the traditional algorithmic understanding.  A conceptual approach to mathematics is common in other countries, and what we as educators are learning is that the conceptual understanding leads to better performance in math.  Our students will be tested on these concepts through topic tests, benchmark tests, a nationally normed assessment called the NWEA three times a year, and the state test of TCAP annually.
Would love a monthly math night for parents+teachers+students.  Thanks

After hearing the 3rd grade parents' concerns tonight, it almost sounds that "No Child Left Behind" is nothing more than slowing down advanced students so the rest can catch up.  True?  If not, why not?

What additional training sessions for parents will you offer?  The school is trying to set up additional nights like this for parents who have interest.
I still have no idea what a complimentary number is.  The decimal number system that we use every day has 10 digits {0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9} and so it is Base-10. A complementary number, in number theory, is the number obtained by subtracting a number from its base. For example, the complement of 7 in numbers to base 10 is 3.   http://www.mathsisfun.com/definitions/
or another way to look at it.
Definition: Base 10 refers to the numbering system in common use. Take a number like 475, base ten refers to the position, the 5 is in the one's place, the 7 is in the ten's place and the 4 is in the hundred's place. Each number is 10 times the value to the right of it, hence the term base ten.  Base 10 blocks are often used in early education in math to help students grasp number. Base 10 blocks have a cube to represent one, ten cube strip to represent ten and a 100 cube block to represent 100.
enVision math is not necessarily a new way of math.  Much of math today is the same as in the "old days", there is new terminology for much of it, and students seem to be learning different aspects of it earlier.  Getting past what terminology is used and also understanding that there is not just one way of finding an answer as many of us were taught is one of the first steps.  Some methods just click for some students, while other methods click for other students.  This math curriculum is teaching them different ways of getting to the same place.
